Underlining the need to provide security to leaders, Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Tuesday instructed the police to be alert in view of Monday’s killing of Zilla Parishad vice-chairman in Visakhapatnam district.

Condemning the killing of Visakhapatnam Zilla Parishad vice-chairman Somalingam, Rosaiah directed the City police to beef up security measures and remain alert in view of the Black Day, May 18, declared by some communal outfits.

The Chief Minister conducted a review of the ‘law and order’ situation in the state along with Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy, Director General of Police RR Girish Kumar, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner AK Khan and Cyberabad Police Commissioner Prabhakar Rao at the Secretariat.

Interacting with the media after the review, Sabita Reddy said, ``the Chief Minister discussed the violent incidents triggered by the banned outfit and the steps to contain communal clashes in the Old City. The meeting also discussed security measures and developmental activities required in the Maoists-afflicted areas, particularly in the tribal areas.

The need to improve the road connectivity to the rural areas in the agency areas to bring the people living in the remote areas into the mainstream was also discussed at the meeting.

 The Home Minister said ``the DGP requested the State Government to make a helicopter available for the police to rush immediately to the spots where Maoists resorted to violence. Reacting to the DGP’s request favourably, the Chief Minister said he would write to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking a helicopter for the State Home Department.
