Naidu seeks action against Obulapuram Mining Corporation.

Hyderabad,Oct 31: The president of the Telugu Desam Party (Tdp) and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Mr N Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday appealed to the Chief Minister, Mr K Rosaiah, to initiate stringent action against the Obulapuram Mining Corporation (OMC) which has ‘blatantly violated all the norms’ and is undertaking mining operations in Ananthapur district bordering Karnataka. In a strongly worded letter to the Chief Minister, Mr Naidu felt that the administration is crumbling due to the onslaught of unruly elements with scant regard to rule of law. The Tdp president termed the alleged attack on a Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) by the OMC staff near Obulapuram mines on Friday as an unprecedented incident.

Mr Naidu pointed out that the DFO himself had declared that the OMC had violated the Forest Act beyond doubt and thus hence he was recommending for canceling the lease of OMC for an area of three km in Ananthapur district.“You are aware that the Tdp has been waging a relentless battle since 2004 against collusion of the then leaders at the helm of affairs with the owners of the OMC to the detriment of the public interest. The irregular manner in which monopolistic control was given over large tracks of mining area to OMC violating all the existing rules and guidelines is contested and protested by the Tdp in different forums,” Mr Naidu said.

The party MLAs had produced documentary evidence on the floor of the Assembly proving that forest land was encroached upon by OMC and even private people were threatened to lose their right under duress. Evidence relating to destruction of historic Sunkalamma Devi Temple was also produced, he claimed.During a visit of an all-party meet to the mining site, the Tdp senior leader, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, was not even allowed to visit the site and left behind.  “We wish to emphasize that the present revelations have proved all our allegations,” he said.
