Hema Malini Announces Permanent Retirement From Bollywood

Veteran actress Hema Malini has announced her permanent exit from Bollywood at 77. With nearly 200 films to her credit, the Dream Girl said today’s filmmaking is hard to adjust to. She last appeared in Shimla Mirchi in 2020 directed by Ramesh Sippy.
Malini told that cinema has changed completely. “Many ask why I’m not working, but it’s difficult now,” she said. She misses the 1970s-80s golden era of women-centric stories, memorable songs, and strong characters. Classics like Sholay and Seeta Aur Geeta defined that phase.
The legendary Bharatanatyam dancer now prefers stage over screen. She recalls working nonstop, with producers repeating her and every film featuring 5-6 hit songs. For Malini, dance remains her true passion and creative outlet in this new chapter of life.
Beyond cinema, Malini is active in politics with BJP. Nominated to Rajya Sabha in 2003, she won Mathura Lok Sabha seat in 2014, 2019, and 2024. Balancing public service and art, she says she’s grateful for a career that spanned decades of Indian film history.
