Crime news: HC issues notices to TV channels

Taking a serious view of crime stores being broadcast unchecked, a Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday issued notices to television channels to stop airing such stories forthwith.

The Bench also came down harshly on the State government for not implementing its earlier orders on the subject.

The Bench said that continuing broadcast of crime news and on serial killers is responsible for polluting young minds. It opined that television serials on crime would disturb tender minds and provoke them to take a path of violence.

The court said “glorification of crime on TV serials will encourage the youth to tread the wrong path. Unnecessary glorification and sensationalising of crime on television is not good for society.”

Television serials, which could caution the people against falling prey to conmen, should be produced and telecast, it opined.

Earlier, the court issued directions to TV channels to stop airing crime news. However, some channels sidestepped the court orders, and taking advantage of loopholes, continued airing such stories.
