Prasad Rao was elected as MLA during 1989 and served as panchayat raj minister for some time. The Congress leader has been inactive in politics for the last five years, but still maintains a group in the district against YSR loyalists and former Union minister Renuka Choudhary who represented the Khammam Lok Sabha constituency earlier .

Admitting that the party has only a marginal presence in the Khammam district, the TRS is hopeful of making strides in the border district with entry of the former minister. The district has considerable migrated population from the Krishna, East Godavari and Guntur districts.
