District Challenges BookMyShow as Movie Ticketing Battle Heats Up

BookMyShow has dominated India’s online movie ticketing market for years, but Zomato owned District is quickly changing the competition. Fresh figures from PVR INOX’s H1 FY27 performance show District’s online ticket sales grew 61% year on year between April and September 2026. BookMyShow, meanwhile, recorded no growth during the same period.

The numbers suggest that District is steadily gaining ground at one of India’s biggest cinema chains. Launched in 2024 after Eternal acquired Paytm’s ticketing business, the platform has expanded much faster than many expected. Reports say District generated over ₹970 crore in revenue during FY26, its first full financial year.

District is also building its presence beyond movie bookings through concerts, sports and other live events. Its combination of dining, movies and entertainment gives users more reasons to open the app. Reports also indicate that its weekly active users have crossed 60% of BookMyShow’s, despite the huge difference in their years of operation.

BookMyShow still has a strong position in movie tickets and major entertainment events, but the competition is becoming tougher. District benefits from Zomato’s large customer base and promotional offers, while other platforms are also exploring this market. If the growth continues, moviegoers could see more discounts, better deals and stronger competition.
