Villain or Second Hero? Senior Actor’s Big Demand

Landing a veteran actor as the antagonist can add a lot of weight to a big-star film. But what happens when the senior actor wants the villain role to come with almost the same importance as the hero?

That seems to be the situation with a new big-ticket project.

According to industry talk, the filmmakers had approached a veteran senior actor, who considers himself one of the legends of the industry, for the antagonist’s role. The makers reportedly felt that his presence would give the film’s conflict an added edge.

However, things apparently changed once the discussions moved beyond the role.

The actor is said to have placed a few conditions before coming on board. One of the major demands was reportedly related to the title credits. He wanted his name to be presented on par with the film’s lead hero, rather than being treated like a regular supporting actor.

That was not the only concern.

The veteran reportedly made it clear that his character should never be overshadowed by the hero. He also apparently did not want to be manhandled or shown being easily overpowered in their confrontation scenes.

For the makers, these conditions became a serious issue because the villain’s role was designed around the hero’s journey. If the antagonist cannot be convincingly defeated or dominated when the story demands it, the entire conflict could lose its impact.

Interestingly, the team is said to have learned about another recent big film where the script allegedly underwent major changes to accommodate similar conditions from the same actor. Those alterations reportedly affected the latter half of the film, which eventually became one of its major weak points.

Whether every detail of this industry talk is accurate or not, the filmmakers are apparently not willing to take the same risk.

They are now said to be considering other senior actors for the role. After all, in a hero-versus-villain story, the villain needs to be powerful enough to challenge the hero, but the story still has to remain bigger than both.
