"The Jnanpith Award goes to the poet Vairamuthu, who rules Tamil with his poetry! I was meeting and talking to the poet this morning. This sweet news arrived shortly after, adding to the sweetness of that meeting! This award, which has only been received by Akilan and Jayakanthan in Tamil so far, has brought him and us a sea of joy, joining hands with our ruling dynasty of poets who play with traditional and modern poetry and create innovations in the world of Tamil literature(sic),"

He continued "If the leader had been an artist, he would have praised Kaviperarasu with all his heart. I stand beside him and congratulate Kaviperarasu @Vairamuthu. Tamil Nadu congratulates the poets on their reign (sic),"

Vairamuthu penned lyrics for approximately 7,500 songs in Tamil films. Earlier Government of India honored him with both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.
