Tamil Nadu theatres are facing a challenging situation with the upcoming Pongal 2026 releases. Two major films, Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi, are scheduled to release on January 9 and January 10, respectively. However, uncertainty surrounds both releases as the censor process is yet to be completed.
With only six days left for Jana Nayagan and seven days for Parasakthi, theatres are struggling to confirm advance booking dates. National multiplex chains outside Tamil Nadu are also facing difficulties in opening ticket bookings without receiving the censor certificates.
The pressure is mounting on theatres, especially single screen theatres, which are finding it tough to manage show timings and opening advance bookings. Some single screens are planning to open online bookings from Monday, even without the censor certificate. The Pongal clash is expected to be intense, with both films containing several political scenes and themes, potentially contributing to the delay.
Overseas distributors are also waiting for censor clearance for both films. Sivakarthikeyan has expressed his shock at the clash and has wished Vijay well, stating that both films have enough space to release and won't affect each other at the box office.
