Swathi Muthyam story penned by newcomer Lakshman Krishna is a hilarious entertainer involving a young couple and their families in a village. Lakshman Krishna starts off the narration in a slow and steady manner. He has taken his own time introducing various characters and passing time with the comedy revolving around them. With nothing much happening in the entire first half, viewers start moving impatiently after the end of the first half.
However, in the second half, Lakshman Krishna's narration, and tough routine, managed to create situational comedy involving all the cast. Though at times, it ends up confusing, Lakshman Krishna emerged successful in creating a laughing riot with routine scenes. Swathi Mutyam's story has similarities to many earlier hits in various languages but Lakshman Krishna managed to entertain viewers in the second half. Finally, after the below-average first half, he took the film to another level in the second half with various hilarious scenes.
Bellamkonda Ganesh on debut looked good as an innocent boy resembling the typical villager in his looks. He tried his best to come up with expressions to show variations. However, he needs to work on them to reach the next level in the industry. Varsha Bollamma performed in a natural manner. At times she looked good on screen. Rao Ramesh excelled in the role of Ganesh's father. His action and mannerisms are a treat to watch. Naresh played his part perfectly as the father of Varsha Bollamma. Vennela Kishore, Pammi Sai, Pragati, Surekha Vani, Naresh, Satish Saripalli, Divya Sripada, Goparaju Ramana, Harshavardhan, Sunaina, Sivannarayana played their parts perfectly. Goparaju Ramana who played the role of Varsha Bollamma created a laughing riot throughout the second half.
Mahati Swara Sagar's background music is good. A couple of songs are good but they acted as speed breakers. Suryaa with his cinematography showed the locations of Pithapuram in a natural manner. Editing of Navin Nooli is ok but could have done away with drags in both the first and the second halves. Dialogues though the routine is hilarious. Production values are good.
Altogether, Bellamkonda Ganesh gave greens a signal to name his debut film Swathimuthyam, after Kamal Haasan's classic Swathimuthyam, everyone started mocking and predicted that the makers will tarnish the original. Swathimuthyam's story selected by debutante Lakshman Krishna is extremely routine to the core. All the actors pass through the motions for most of the first half the lack of interesting twists and turns. But Lakshman Krishna gained his confidence and tickled everyone's bones making the optimum use of all the senior stars. The senior stars' presence and performance, made viewers forget Ganesh's shortcomings. Lakshman Krishna's screenplay and direction are good in the second half after going awry in the first half. Altogether Swathimuthyam is a situational hilarious entertainer and with the Dasara festive season on, it will appeal to the family viewers. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2.75 rating for Swathimuthyam.
