Venkatesh, Rana's web series Rana Naidu which is the Indian adaptation of US show Ray Donovan, received immense flak from Tollywood viewers for his bold content and bolder dialogues though Bollywood viewed it in a normal way. Now the web series' second season started streaming on Netflix. At the start of season 2, the makers announced that they have toned down the bold content for the Indian viewers. Rana Naidu 2 started streaming on Netflix and let us see what it offered to movie lovers and whether it bettered the first season.
Rana Naidu 2 also highlights the father son bonding and the clash of their egos and how it impacted their lives and those surrounding them. Rana Naidu (Rana) gets a huge shock when his son Ani(Madhav Dhingra) gets kidnapped. He goes all out to save his son and where this leads to and what role Rana's wife Naina (Surveen Chawla), father Naga Naidu (Venkatesh), brothers Tej Naidu, Pawan Naidu (Sushant Singh, Abhishek Banerjee), dreaded gangsters Rauf Mirza (Arjun Rampal, Heeba Shah), powerful cop Naveen (Dino Morea). Greedy politician OB.Mahajan (Rajesh Jais), ruthless billionaire (Rajat Kapoor), his daughter (Kriti Kabhanda) played an interesting part in the proceedings.
Rana impresses with his looks and screen presence. He came up with intensity elevating the scenes with his expressions and emotions. He delivered dialogues with ease.
Venkatesh made his presence felt with his performance. He showed his experience and added value to the proceedings.
Arjun Rampal is good in the role of the antagonist. However he did not get that menacing look and this puts off the viewers as he fails to create an impact.
Surveen Chawla, Kriti Kharbanda and Aditi Shetty though got minimal roles made an impact with their performances. Tarun Virvani and Rajat Kapoor performed according to their roles.
Rana Naidu 2 season follows from where the first season ends. There are 8 episodes in season 2 and each episode comes to around 50 minute’s duration. Directors Suparn Verma & Karan Anshuman toned down the obscene dialogues and bold content in the season 2 though at times they cropped up in few scenes. But the dialogues penned for the characters turned out to be a huge disappointment. The writers should have worked on it before proceeding ahead with season 2.
The narration, however, lacks novelty and this robs viewers of the excitement. Except for the toning down of the adult content, the film offered nothing new. Only the presence of Rana made the series somewhat watchable. The entire narration turns messier and more confusing and gives more torture. The face offs between Rana and Venkatesh is not seen anywhere robbing viewers of the excitement.
The cinematography of John Schimdth elevated the dark tone of the story and the soul of the narration. The background music of John Stewart Eduri is good and added value to the scenes in all the episodes except for a few. Editing of Ninad Khanolkar
is ok but could have been better as there are many scenes that repeated and ended up testing the patience of the viewers. Production values are good.
Altogether, Rana Naidu 2 turns out to be messier. Though the makers promised to turn the season 2 more thrilling and watchable, on the contrary it ended up testing the patience of the movie lovers. The director duo should have worked on the story and script and come up with powerful dialogues, reworking on everything for better result. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 1.75 rating for Rana Naidu 2.
