Raj R is coming with a film titled 23. The film is generating interest as it is helmed by Raj R who on debut captured the imagination of all with the film Mallesham. Let us see what the film 23 based on real life incidents offered to movie lovers.
23, is inspired by real life incidents and how the judiciary delivered judgments that impacted the lives of many. Sagar (Teja) who aspires to start his own Tiffin centre falls in love with Susheela (Tanmai Khushi). Their love life takes a drastic turn forcing Sagar to take an extreme step egged by his friend Das (Pawon Ramesh).
Where this leads and how it is connected to the psychologist (Jhansi), prisoner Raju (Thagubotu Ramesh), lawyer Chandra (Praneeth) form the rest of the narration.
Teja performed well as a lover who tries his best to keep his lady love happy. He emoted well and expressed himself accordingly Vis a Vis his parents, prisoners and lover. He carried himself well on the screen.
Tanmai Khushi looked good and innocent on the screen. She impressed all in traditional attire. She in the later half emoted well according to the situation.
Pawon Ramesh did well in the role of the protagonist's friend. Praneeth who played the role of the lawyer came up with powerful dialogues and intense expressions. Thagubothu Ramesh made his presence felt. Jhansi performed well in the role of the psychologist. Others performed according to their roles.
23 Story is penned by Raj R. Raj R who came up with a biopic in Mallesham, this time, once again drew inspiration from the real life incidents and tried to analyse it on the screen. He started off with the Chundur brutal massacre of the dalits by the higher class people and how justice is denied for them as the criminal’s walks off freely even after the inhuman crime. He completed this episode with in no time and then shifted his focus to the Chilakalurpet bus burning case where innocents are burnt alive by two people.
He concentrated more on it throughout the first half and even during the second half and ended the climax with the incident being the spotlight. In between he touched up on the Jubilee Hills bombast case and how the criminal walks free with his political connections. Though, the director may claim that he drew inspirations from all the three, his main focus on the Chilakurpet bus burning case.
He showed the emotions of not only those who got arrested for the act but also those of the victims. He however focussed more on those arrested and highlighted the reason for their crime, their financial status and also the state of mind and also threw light on the reforms in the jail regarding criminals and how justice is not denied to the innocents despite repeated appeals and how influential got scot free and gets ready to commit another crime.
He raised pertinent questions through hard-hitting dialogues but the narration is slow and the screenplay is unidimensional and predictable bereft of any twists. The docudrama type of narration ended up testing the patience of the viewers. For most of the film, he highlighted the emotions of the main actors and at times ended up repeating them. The second half fared little bit well and the entry of Jhansi and now cop excites the proceedings before the film ends in a predictable manner.
The cinematography of Sunny Kurapati is good. He showed the village rustic atmosphere in a realistic and natural way. He showed the jail scenes in a impactful manner using the colour grading quite well. Alayam Anil's editing is ok but could have been far better. The pace is extremely slow in the first half and continued in the same vein. This tested the patience of the viewers. He should have done away with the slow and dragged scenes. The music of Mark K Rubin is good. Songs are situational and tuned quite well. His background music is in sync with the storyline. Production values are decent.
Altogether, 23 is the rustic and realistic entertainer. Director Raj with his film came up with powerful message and hard-hitting dialogues. He got decent performances from the actors but the docudrama narration, slow pace impacted the film. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2 rating for 23.
