Water level rises at Hussain Sagar

Due to recent rains the state capital has experienced in the last couple of days, the water levels  at Hussain Sagar lake  risen to 513.4 mm against the capacity of 513.45 mm. Following the rise in  water levels at the Hussain Sagar, the Irrigation authorities have announced that  there  is no threat for the people living in and around Tankbund.  All precautions are being taken to release the excess water for the safety of the people.

According to the  environmentalists the only problem is of pollution due to the continuous discharge of untreated domestic sewage and toxic industrial chemical  flowing into the lake.  In spite of the presence of several Central Effluent Treatment Plant and Sewage Treatment plants to restrict the pollution yet a considerable amount of sewage flows into the lake.

The presence of  toxic substances over longer periods which is swept by the rain waters is the cause of concern for for polluting the air in the city.

 The main threat to the lake is encroachment by both private and public agencies. In the past 30 years, the lake has shrunk about 40 % of its original size (550 ha to 349 ha). In addition to the encroachment the lake also faces the problem of pollution due to the continuous discharge of untreated domestic sewage and toxic industrial chemicals for several years. Although several Central Effluent Treatment Plant and Sewage Treatment plant have grown up to restrict the pollution yet a considerable amount of sewage flows into the lake.
