Panchayat Raj Minister K Jana Reddy on Friday wrote a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi appealing her to take a speedy decision on Telangana statehood issue.

Talking to media persons at the State Secretariat, Jana Reddy said that he has appealed to Sonia Gandhi to announce her decision on Telangana statehood issue to prevent suicide of students in the region. In the letter, he said that he had stressed the importance of taking a favourable decision on bifurcation of the State issue in order to strengthen the party base in the region. “The favourable decision on Telangana will benefit the party in the ensuing elections,” he stated.

Responding to Telangana leaders visit to New Delhi to mount pressure on high command over the statehood issue, he opined that right now there was no need for them to go to New Delhi. However, he said that the leaders from the region would go to the national capital at an appropriate time. He also claimed that no one raised objection over the Telangana leaders' visit to New Delhi.

“It is the responsibility of Congress Core Committee to take a favourable decision on the statehood demand,” he said.

Jana Reddy hoped that the Congress High Command would take a decision on Telangana issue after the completion of by-elections for 18 assembly segments in the State.
