HC notice to Govt on Srisailam dam height

Hyderabad,Oct 13: Taking a serious note on Government Order No 107, which envisages an increase of  the minimum storage level (MSL) in the Srisailam dam from 834 feet to 854 feet, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the state government and directed it to explain its stand on the issue. The court questioned the government’s move and asked how it can make GO without taking the recommendations of experts’ opinion into consideration. When the Congress assumed power in 2004, it passed a GO to the effect that that the minimum storage level (MSL) in the Srisailam dam can be increased from 834 feet to 854 feet.

This resulted in the officials waiting for the water to rise to such levels before releasing the water during the floods. This apparently led to the flooding of Kurnool city. The GO has become a bone of contention for MPs and MLAs from Kurnool district, who say that but for the controversial GO, Kurnool would have been saved from the disaster today.
