President Pratibha Patil on Friday appointed former Andhra Pradesh chief minister K Rosaiah as the new Governor of Tamil Nadu in place of Surjit Singh Barnala, whose term is ending, according to a statement issued here.

Rosaiah is among four new governors whose appointment was announced by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Rosaiah (78) replaces Surjit Singh Barnala who took over the post on June 20, 2006. He had taken over as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister on September 3, 2009, following the death of the then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash, and held the post till November 24, 2010.

"Their appointments will take effect from the dates they assume their respective charges," the statement said.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters in Hyderabad Rosaiah said he would join his new assignment on September 2. He said he would work responsibly and give his best in the performing the job assigned by the high command.
