Budvel police on Monday formally requested Income Tax officials to investigate the source of Rs 4.95 lakh which were seized by personnel manning the TP Kunta check-post in Gopavaram mandal near Badvel in the Kadapa district late on Sunday night.

According to Budvel Inspector K Ullafaiah the cash was being transported in a car which was stopped and checked by the police personnel at the check-post.

The car was being driven by a doctor, identified as Muralidhar, who was heading towards Wanaparthy from Nellore.

When questioned, the doctor claimed that he had loaned some money to his friend Vijay Kumar some year ago on interest. He further said that the money was part of the loan which his friend had given as installment.

However, the replies did not satisfy the policemen who demanded that the doctor produce the promissory note as evidence.

Mr Ullafaiah stated that the doctor managed to produce a promissory note which looks like having been freshly made. The police officer further said that the promissory note looks as if it was hastily created last night itself.

He added that the money and the promissory note were handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigations.

Earlier on April 12, police personnel seized around Rs 55 lakh in cash from a man who is suspected to be close to an MLA from Nellore. The cash was being transported in a car which was stopped and checked by the police personnel at the check-post. The driver of the car, along with 2 more persons, was detained and interrogated.

A day earlier, another car had been stopped and searched at the Pipikunta check-post in Gopavaram mandal had yielded cash amounting to Rs 28 lakhs.

Police sources said that the driver of the car, identified as one Raghavendra, could not convince the police officials about the purpose behind transporting such a huge amount of cash.

His claims that the cash was being taken to purchase iron ore was met with scepticism by the police officials.
