Vijay Misses Majority Mark As Tamil Nadu CM Oath Faces Delay

Tamil Nadu politics is seeing high drama right now. TVK chief and actor Vijay met Governor RV Arlekar for the third time in three days to stake claim to form the government. But he has not been invited to take oath as Chief Minister on Saturday. The reason is simple. He could not show support of 118 MLAs, which is the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Two probable allies, IUML and AMMK, have said no to TVK. This has hurt Vijay’s chances. After talks, his current support stands at 116 MLAs. That leaves him two short. VCK support is also not confirmed yet. Sources say VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan is not responding to TVK after his MLAs met DMK president MK Stalin.
Vijay gave a letter to the Governor with 116 MLAs and said two VCK legislators promised support. He asked for an 11 am oath on Saturday and said the letters will come soon. The Governor said he has no issue with the timing if Vijay gives proof of 118 MLAs first. TVK even announced the oath time publicly. But unlike earlier meetings, Lok Bhavan did not release any press note this time. The Governor is still waiting for the two letters.
TVK became the single-largest party with 108 seats but missed the majority mark. Congress, CPI, CPM, and VCK tried to help Vijay cross 118. But IUML and AMMK walking away was a big blow. There is also talk in political circles that old rivals DMK and AIADMK may join hands after 50 years to keep Vijay out of power. TVK leaders are upset and say the Governor is delaying the process.
The 2026 election is already historic. For the first time since Independence, no party got a full majority in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s entry has changed the game and excited young voters. But without the final two MLAs, his oath as Chief Minister remains on hold. All eyes are now on VCK and the Governor’s next move.
