What’s Behind?

Ram Gopal Varma for long lost his technical brilliance and sheen of making memorable films. He is now passing time with his silly and insulting comments on various celebrities on social media and substandard films which got screened in empty theatres. However, during corona, he released his films on OTTs attracting the attention of all. He started his own OTT Spark and Kickstarted it by releasing his own film  D Company. Let us see what RGV's D Company has got to offer to movie lovers.

Story Review:

Dawood Ibrahim (Ashwath Kanth), son of an auto driver in Mumbai goes on to become the dreaded underworld don indulging in various genius crimes and bomb blasts in the country and then escaping send hiding somewhere in the enemy nation Pakistan. How Dawood Ibrahim became the underworld don, what circumstances forced him to do so and what is his connection with others like Chota Shakeel(Pranay Dixit), Sabir(Rudra Kanth), Alamzeb(Abhilash Chowdhury), Javed(Vikas Rao), Samad(Rocky Mahajan), Chitra(Ira Mora) and what roles Naina Ganguly and Apsara Rani played should be found out on screen.

Artists, Technicians Review:

Ram Gopal Varma who has been doing only controversial films these times, showed his mark in D Company. He showed Mumbai underworld operations realistically and naturally as he showed them in his earlier films. He showed even the intricate and unknown details in the life of Dawood Ibrahim effectively and attractively. He depicted Dawood's rise as an underworld don in a powerful manner.

RGV showed Dawood becoming the don and his rise to the most wanted criminal will be shown in the next episode. The story is nothing new and all the scenes were shown by RGV in his earlier gangster films with different names. The same routine dialogues, item songs, gangsters cruel faces of wicked smiles and gunshots are seen by viewers in various films. If the gangsters do not seem to use abusive words, they are seen killing people with their guns. Similarly, if their lovers do not seem to seduce them, they are seen wearing worried faces.

There's nothing much to talk about RGV's screenplay and direction as he followed the same template. His voice over with time irritates viewers and so is the case with his be a song. Of late everything is becoming typecast in his films.

Paul Praveen's music is not that effective but he made a good impact with the background score. It is in sync with the background music in RGV's earlier films which is a bit loud. Malhar Butt Joshi's cinematography is good and reminded of RGV's old films. Sangha Pratap Kumar's editing is good.

Ashwath Kanth who played the role of Dawood Ibrahim and Rudra Kanth who played the role of his brother Sabir made a lasting impression. Naina Ganguly and Ira Mor who played the roles of Dawood and Sabir's lovers made their presence felt through appeared for a short time. Apsara Rani set the screens on fire with her special song. Others performed according to their roles.

Advantages:

Depiction of real-life names and characters

Few twists

Duration

Drawbacks:

Routine story

Screenplay, direction

Drags, repetitions

Cuss words, dialogues

Review Rating Analysis:

Dawood Ibrahim is known as a dreaded gangster to everyone and one might have felt that there will be nothing new in the film. However, RGV managed to generate interest by showing few interesting things. Those who love films on the underworld and RGV's fans can watch the D Company. But viewers may not connect to unknown actors. Taking all these things into consideration CJ goes with 2 ratings for D Company.
