Sudha Kongara's directorial Soorarai Pottru which won hearts across the globe has now entered the race of Oscars. Starring Suriya and Aparana Balamurli, the film is competing in General Category for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Composer and Best story writer among other categories.

Soorarai Pottru released last year was the first Tamil film to release straight on OTT platform. The film is based loosely on Air Deccan founder Capt G R Gopinath's life. The film is made available at Academy Screening Room for viewing from January 26 for votes and nominations.

The team elated with the news shared happiness on social media. Music director G V Prakash Kumar tweeted, "Am super happy to announce that #SooraraiPottru enters the #oscars race ... including best original score category ... god bless ... @2D_ENTPVTLTD @Suriya_offl @rajsekarpandian #sudhakongara”.

Film producer said, “Our team is confident that the film will impress upon the Oscar Jury members as how it has impressed millions of film lovers across the globe.” Previously spkeiang about the film Suriya had said, "Soorarai Pottru is a very special movie for me and one that’s very close to my heart. With this film, we want to bring out the message that nothing in this world can stop you from chasing your dreams if you are true to yourself and dedicated to the task. We hope that the audience will continue to shower us with their unwavering support."

With the novel coronavirus, the rules have been amended by the Academy Awards. Films which have got released on OTT, even they can compete.
