Cyclone Gaja is a major disaster and its fiscal impact in Tamil Nadu state is analogous to that of the tsunami in 2004. The devastation suffered by thousands of people in several districts of the State has been severe, going well beyond the annual storm season losses.
Communities in the affected areas are distressed as houses have collapsed, farms ruined, water sources are polluted and electricity supply remains disrupted. Many areas remain inaccessible because fallen trees have blocked roads.
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan on Friday expressed sadness over loss of lives caused by cyclone and urged people to lend their support. “I'm very saddened to hear of the devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja in Tamil Nadu. Let us all come together to help our brothers and sisters there who are suffering. Let us try and contribute in any way that we can,” said Aamir Khan in his tweet.
Kamal Haasan thanked Aamir Khan for urging people to contribute towards relief measures. “Thank you so much @aamir_khan Ji. In many ways people like you make us feel it is truly “One Country”,” posted Kamal Haasan replying to Aamir Khan’s tweet.
Interim, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the construction of one lakh concrete houses for people who have lost their homes and also sought aid from the central government.
