Imran Khan’s Protest Lands Him In Legal Trouble

Veteran actor Gajendra Chauhan has criticised actor Imran Khan for taking part in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai. Chauhan said Imran should face punishment if he had broken the law.
Imran, who holds American citizenship and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, joined the protest at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The demonstrators called for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Following the incident, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued a notice asking Imran to leave India by October 28.
Chauhan questioned why Imran had joined the protest while living in India as an American citizen. He pointed out that OCI cardholders cannot vote or contest elections in India and argued that Imran should face the consequences if he had violated any rules. He also questioned why the authorities had given the actor time to leave the country.
The issue has drawn mixed reactions from the film industry. Veteran actor Raza Murad supported the authorities' action, while filmmaker Kiran Rao and actor Saba Azad expressed support for Imran.
Imran is reportedly planning to challenge the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court. His lawyer has argued that the law does not specifically prohibit OCI cardholders from participating in protests.
The matter has now become a legal dispute, with the rules governing OCI cardholders and their participation in public demonstrations at the centre of the debate.
