Sukumar And His Disciples Second Product Syndrome

Sukumar’s filmmaking school has produced several notable directors, but Buchi Babu Sana and Srikanth Odela are now facing the tougher second film phase. Buchi Babu followed Uppena with Ram Charan’s Peddi, while Odela has returned with Nani’s The Paradise. Both projects significantly expanded their scale and commercial expectations.

Uppena became a major success and established Buchi Babu quickly, while Dasara similarly gave Srikanth Odela a strong breakthrough. Their follow ups, however, arrived with bigger stars, larger production values and greater expectations. Peddi received mixed commercial responses despite its scale, while The Paradise opened to mixed reactions, with its first half and Nani’s performance receiving praise alongside criticism of writing and pacing.

The larger budgets are certainly part of the conversation, but they are not the only factor behind the different outcomes. The Paradise reportedly carries a budget several times that of Dasara, while Peddi was mounted as a major pan India sports drama. Both filmmakers attempted to expand their storytelling canvas beyond their successful debuts.

Earlier Sukumar too faced same situation. After his blockbuster debut with Aarya with Allu Arjun, Sukumar's second film Jagadam with Ram turned out to be a commercial failure though it gain accolades for its making. Sukumar’s protégés have also delivered successes across different stages. Palnati Surya Pratap directed Kumari 21F and 18 Pages, and now coming with Antha Ramulore Chuskuntaru, while Karthik Varma Dandu made Virupaksha, is now coming with Vrushakarma with Sukumar associated as writer or producer on these projects.
