Vaazha 2 is still making waves after its huge Malayalam success. The Telugu dubbed version hit screens on April 24 and has managed to collect around 4 crore gross in its first four days. The film opened to a decent response with about 3.1 crore gross over the Friday to Sunday weekend. The hold looks steady so far and the trend suggests it will end up as an above average performer in Telugu. For a Malayalam film releasing three weeks late, that is a respectable run.
Despite positive reviews A lot of people feel the makers slipped up with the title. Calling it Vaazha 2 made many Telugu viewers think it is a sequel. Since most of them did not watch the first Vaazha, they skipped the film thinking they would not understand the story. A different title without the 2 could have helped. Still, the film got good word of mouth and even actors like Ram Charan appreciated the Telugu version, which gave it a nice boost.
The original Malayalam Vaazha 2 is a different story altogether. Directed by Savin S A, it has become a record breaking blockbuster with around 210 crore gross worldwide entering into Top 5 Malayalam films without stars . The makers waited to release the Telugu version to use that strong buzz from Kerala. The plan worked to an extent.
With the success of Vaazha 2, the team has already announced Vaazha III: Biopic of a Billion Girls. That shows they are serious about building this into a full franchise. Fans on Instagram and YouTube are already talking about what the third part could be. For now, Vaazha 2 continues to run in Telugu theatres and the steady numbers prove that good content finds its audience, even with a confusing title.
