Tamil Nadu Politics Heads Into Big Twist

Big drama hit Tamil Nadu politics just hours before actor Vijay’s oath as Chief Minister was set to happen. His party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, won 108 seats and became the single largest party. But it is 10 seats short of the 118 needed for majority in the 234 member Assembly.
Governor Vishnu Dev Varma has now asked TVK to give support letters from 118 MLAs by Friday. Because of this, Vijay’s swearing in ceremony has been cancelled. This is an unexpected setback for Thalapathy Vijay. TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and asked for a chance to form the government. He said they can prove majority on the Assembly floor after the oath.
But the Governor did not agree and said proof must come first. If TVK fails to show 118 MLAs by Friday, the Governor may keep the Assembly under suspended animation for six months. In that time, other parties can try to form the government. Congress won 5 seats and was expected to support TVK, but now that support is not clear.
This twist has started new talk in political circles. Reports say DMK and AIADMK leaders may be checking options for an alternative alliance if TVK cannot reach the magic number. This is a big test for Vijay who left cinema to enter full time politics with TVK. He led a strong campaign and became the largest party in his first election, but now the numbers game is tough. The next few days will decide if Vijay can still become Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister or if the state will see a new political equation
