Malayalam filmmakers Khalid Rahman, Ashraf Hamsa, Sameer Thahir and their friend Shalif Muhammad have been officially charged after their arrest in Kochi earlier this year. The Kerala Excise Department’s Enforcement and Anti‑Narcotic Special Squad filed a chargesheet in the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Ernakulam, citing the seizure of 1.5 g of hybrid ganja from a rented apartment. All four were granted bail and the investigation remains ongoing.
The case revolves around a small quantity of cannabis recovered during a pre‑dawn raid on April 27 at an apartment rented by cinematographer‑turned‑director Sameer Thahir near Marine Drive, Kochi. The Excise team seized 1.5 g of suspected hybrid ganja, leading to charges under Section 20(b)(ii)(A) of the NDPS Act for possession of a small quantity and Section 29 for abetment and criminal conspiracy. If convicted, the punishment may be limited to a fine.
The authorities have identified a supplier named Naveen from Kozhikode, but he is yet to be traced. Investigators highlighted that the flat was used with the knowledge of Thahir, which resulted in action against him as well. The incident has sparked debate about drug use in rental properties and its impact on Malayalam cinema, drawing attention from media outlets like The Hindu and PTI.
Khalid Rahman is known for hits such as Manjummel Boys and Thallumaala, Ashraf Hamsa for Thamaasha and Bheemante Vazhi, and Sameer Thahir for classics like Chappa Kurishu and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi. The case continues to unfold as the court proceedings begin.
