Tamil Producers Say No to 8 Week OTT Rule

Producers Take On OTT Window

Tamil producers are drawing a clear line in the sand. They’ve flat-out rejected the 8-week OTT window demand that exhibitors have been pushing. The Tamil Film Producers Council isn’t on board with the rule proposed by the Tamil Film Distributors Association and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association. This isn’t a small disagreement, it’s a full stand-off over how soon films can hit streaming after a theatrical run.  

For weeks now, exhibitors have been insisting that Tamil films follow Bollywood’s 8-week OTT gap to protect theatre business. But producers say that kind of fixed window just doesn’t work for them. The South Indian Film Producers Association (SIFPA) already said the same thing recently: you can’t force OTT commitments without talking to the people funding the films. Now the Tamil producers are echoing that view, saying the 8-week demand is not feasible and they won’t sign off on it individually. A final call will be taken at the General Body Meeting on April 26, 2026.  

SIFPA, which represents producers across Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam, has also pushed back hard against one-sided decisions. Their point is simple, exhibitors can’t set OTT rules alone because producers carry the financial risk. If a film doesn’t do well in theatres, waiting 8 weeks for OTT can hurt recovery badly. That’s why SIFPA has advised all its members not to sign any individual 8-week OTT commitments until there’s proper consultation.

This clash shows a bigger shift happening in South cinema. Theatres want longer exclusivity, producers want flexibility to survive. With the General Body Meeting coming up, all eyes are on April 26 to see if there’s a middle path or if this standoff gets sharper. One thing is clear though, Tamil producers aren’t ready to blindly follow the 8-week OTT playbook.
