Oscar Academy Ends Post Nomination Screenings

Academy Brings Changes In Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced it will no longer host post nomination screenings for Oscar-nominated films, citing a significant drop in member participation. Over the past two years, an average of just five members attended these screenings, prompting the decision to discontinue them altogether. This change will be implemented for the 2026 Oscars.

The decline in attendance has been noticeable since the launch of the members only Academy Screening Room seven years ago, allowing members to watch films from home. The Academy stated, "Moving forward, as turnout for our post-nomination screenings has been incredibly small over the last few years...we will not rescreen these films".

Some Academy members have criticized the decision, arguing it undermines films intended for big screen viewing. They cite movies like Frankenstein and Avatar: Fire and Ash, which lose their impact on television screens. For the 2026 Oscars, members must watch all nominated films in a category to vote in the final round, tracked via the Screening Room app.

Final voting opens on February 26 and closes on March 5, with the ceremony airing live after voting closes. Other changes include a new Achievement in Casting award and AI guidelines for films. The 2026 Oscars are set for March 15.
