Tollywood filmmakers overuse of Hindu Gods decreasing interest. The sensation of Karthikeya 2 and Hanu-Man at the national level made Tollywood filmmakers look up to the new beginning. From then on they started using Hindu sentiments and dieties in their films and many feel that this resulted in overuse and in the end movie lovers started losing their interest.
The latest example being Balakrishna's Akhanda2. A top producer says “We are clearly going overboard and need to take a break,” He adds “The depiction of Hindu gods during fight sequences draws whistles in theatres, and that temptation is pushing stars and directors to overstep. But this trend needs to be curtailed.”
He pointed out "Prabhas appeared in Kannappa, Pawan Kalyan played a godly character in Gopala Gopala, while Jr NTR portrayed Lord Rama as a child artist in Bala Ramayanam. Playing a mythological role once in a while is fine, but almost every other Telugu film today has a god connection. Perhaps it’s an attempt to appeal to Hindi-speaking audiences, but that strategy has its own limitations,”
Prashanth Varma is coming up with a film Mahankali in which Bhoomi Shetty is playing the role of Goddess Mahakali. In Rajamouli's Varanasi, Mahesh Babu is playing the role of Lord Ram. Rishab Shetty is playing the role of Lord Hanuman in Jai Hanuman.
The producer says “Telugu filmmakers are certainly capable of delivering compelling socio-fantasies and there are around five to six films on floors,” He concludes “But they must explore a wider range of subjects. If every film leans on gods, audience fatigue is inevitable.”
