Vijay's last film before entering politics, Jana Nayagan, is set to release on Pongal 2026, and fans are eagerly waiting. The film has already made waves with its record-breaking business, despite not being a massive or grandiose production. The Tamil Nadu theatrical rights have been sold for a staggering Rs 105 crore, setting a new record in the region's film distribution market.
To achieve breakeven, Jana Nayagan needs to collect over 500 Cr gross worldwide, excluding North Belts. The film's break-even gross is approximated as follows: Tamil Nadu (220 Cr), Telugu States (20 Cr), Karnataka (30 Cr), Kerala (35 Cr), and Overseas (210 Cr). To be profitable, the film must cross 550 Cr gross worldwide, a feat achieved by only three Kollywood films: 2 Point O, Jailer, and Leo.
The film's budget is reportedly around Rs 375-400 crore, with Vijay's salary being a significant portion. The makers have gone all out to make Jana Nayagan a grand cinematic farewell, with a worldwide release strategy in place. The film's digital rights have been sold to Amazon Prime Video for Rs 121 crore, and satellite rights have been acquired by Sun TV for Rs 55 crore.
Jana Nayagan faces stiff competition from other big-ticket films, including Prabhas Raja Saab and Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi, which are also releasing for Pongal. The film's success will depend on its performance in India and overseas markets, particularly in North America, where it needs to earn around $5.75 million to breakeven.
