Vijay's upcoming film Jana Nayagan has created history in Tamil Nadu, fetching a whopping ₹105 crore for the producer from Tamil Nadu theatrical rights alone. This is the highest amount ever paid for a Tamil film in the region. The film's massive success is attributed to Vijay's established stardom and the announcement that Jana Nayagan will be his final film before entering politics.
The producers initially attempted to sell the entire Tamil Nadu theatrical rights to a single distributor but opted for multiple distributors due to concerns over risk. With all territories' business reportedly closed, Jana Nayagan has generated significant anticipation among audiences. To achieve breakeven, the film needs to collect over ₹200 crore gross, a challenging but achievable target given Vijay's star power.
The film's overseas rights have also been sold for ₹78 crore, with North American rights fetching ₹25 crore and Malaysian rights sold for ₹12 crore. The audio rights were sold for ₹35 crore, and Amazon Prime Video acquired digital streaming rights for ₹110 crore, making Jana Nayagan one of the most expensive Tamil films.
With a massive budget of ₹375-400 crore, Jana Nayagan needs to perform exceptionally well at the Indian box office to become a success. The film's release is scheduled for January 9, 2026, and is expected to dominate the box office, especially in Tamil Nadu.
