MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Grandson Files Plea Against Kaantha

Last Minute Hurdle For Kaantha

B Thiagarajan, grandson of legendary Tamil actor MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, has approached the Madras High Court seeking legal action against the upcoming film Kaantha. The movie, starring Dulquer Salmaan and coproduced by Rana Daggubati, is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 14. Thiagarajan contends that the film falsely depicts his grandfather as a person of loose morals who became blind and died in penury, which he asserts is entirely inaccurate.

In his petition, Thiagarajan emphasizes that MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar lived a life of strong values, compassion, and financial independence, and that the portrayal in Kaantha is damaging to his legacy. He also points out that the filmmakers did not seek permission from the family, a requirement when a film is based on real personalities. Consequently, the plea demands a permanent injunction to prevent the film’s release and any depiction that tarnishes Bhagavathar’s reputation.

Kaantha is a perioddriven narrative written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj. The cast includes Dulquer Salmaan, Rana Daggubati, Samuthirakani, and Bhagyashri Borse, among others. The film has been generating buzz for its storyline set in the 1950s Tamil film industry, though it has sparked controversy over its alleged biographical elements.
