Deepika Padukone will not be starring in the sequel to the blockbuster film Kalki 2898 AD, producers Vyjayanthi Movies announced on Twitter. The production house cited an inability to "find a partnership" despite their collaborative efforts on the first film, hinting at differences over the actress's level of commitment. "A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more," the statement read, wishing Deepika Padukone success in her future endeavours.
The film Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, boasts an ensemble cast, including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani. Deepika Padukone played the pivotal role of Sumathi, the prophesied mother of Kalki, and her absence will likely impact the sequel's storyline.
This development comes after Deepika Padukone's exit from another project, Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, where she was replaced by Triptii Dimri. Reports suggested creative and contractual disagreements contributed to her departure, including demands for an eight-hour workday and profit-sharing. Deepika's decision to prioritize her commitments has sparked discussions about her future projects, including her upcoming film with Allu Arjun, directed by Atlee.
Deepika Padukone's fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment and speculate about potential replacements for her role in the Kalki 2898 AD sequel. Some fans have suggested Keerthy Suresh or Kalyani Priyadarshan as possible alternatives. The production house has not yet announced any details about the sequel's cast or release date.
