The Madras High Court has dismissed Sun Pictures' petition seeking a U/A certificate for the film Coolie, starring Rajinikanth. The production house had contended that the A certification granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was unjustly limiting access to the film for young fans. However, the court ruled that the plea had no merit, upholding the CBFC's decision to grant an A certificate due to the film's violent content.
The CBFC had granted an A certificate to Coolie, citing the film's strong themes of violence, gruesome killing, smoking, and drinking. The board had suggested edits to the film to obtain a U/A certificate, but the makers declined to make the changes. The Additional Solicitor General argued that the CBFC's decision was taken unanimously and that the film's content warranted an A certificate.
Despite the certification issue limiting young fans' access to theaters, Coolie has still managed to gross over Rs 350 crore across India and over Rs 490 crore globally. The film has become a profitable and successful venture for director Lokesh Kanagaraj and star Rajinikanth. The film's ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan, has been praised for their performances.
The Madras High Court's decision to dismiss Sun Pictures' plea has upheld the CBFC's certification of Coolie as an A-rated film. Despite this, the film has achieved significant commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in India. The film's music, cinematography, and editing have been well received by audiences, contributing to its success.
