Suriya Retro Falls Short at the Box Office

Yet Another Disaster For Suriya

Suriya's latest film, Retro, released in theaters on May 1, failed to impress audiences and fell short of the 100 Cr Club. Despite being eagerly awaited by fans, the film did not meet expectations and collected a total gross of 95 Cr worldwide. The Karthik Subbaraj directorial earned 48.5 Cr gross in Tamil Nadu, 22 Cr gross in the rest of India, and 24.5 Cr gross overseas.

The film's performance is considered disappointing, especially when compared to other competitors' films that are grossing 250-300 Cr or even 400 Cr. Retro's inability to cross the 100 Cr mark is seen as a significant setback for Suriya, who needs to make a massive comeback. Although the film was made on a reasonable budget and fetched good non-theatrical deals, its box office performance is still a concern. Even his last film Kanguva which was considered as a huge flop crossed 100 Crores.

Suriya has a couple of films lined up for release in the coming months. His next film with RJ Balaji is scheduled for release this October, while the Venky Atluri film is slated for a summer 2026 release. The success of these films will depend on various factors, including the storyline, direction, and Suriya's performance. With the market expectations from Suriya being high, he needs to deliver a strong performance to regain his footing.

The trade considers Retro's revenue as bad revenue for Suriya's market, given the current competition in the film industry. Suriya's recent films have struggled to reach the 100 Cr mark, and he needs to make a big comeback to regain his position in the industry. The upcoming films will be crucial in determining Suriya's future prospects and his ability to bounce back from the disappointment of Retro.
