Flight No. IX-892 of Air India, a Boeing 737 bound from Dubai to Mangalore was crashed on the runway of Mangalore’s Bajpe Airport. On board there are 173 passenegsr of which six were rescued and 160 were declared dead few minutes before by Karnataka Government. Flight was to reach the airport at morning 6.30 AM but it overshot the runway during landing, broke the fence, went beyond the boundary wall of the airport and fell into a valley which is 300 metres deep. Of the total death toll, majority are Kannadigas and Mallus.

Mangalore’s Bajpe Airport is constructed on a hillock and its run way is considered as table top runway which only experienced pilots can steer over. Airplane is presently on fire and smoke was seen coming out of the airport. Other flights that are to reach Mangalore today are cancelled. With heavy downpur creating major hurdle for rescue operations, Aviation officials are arranging all that is possible to put down the fires.  

Aviation minister Praful Patel and Veerappa Moily reached the spot to look after the rescue operations.
