Nirbhaya Case: Delhi's Tihar jail has gone into lockdown mode ahead of the execution of the death sentences of four men - Akshay Kumar Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh - convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case.

The four convicts are woken up from their sleep at 4 AM and asked to take a bath. They refused to read any religious scripture. The four were then served the last breakfast and underwent a medical checkup which established that they were fit to bear the punishment handed out to them. The jail superintendent checked for any notice which could standstill the hanging and no such document was received.

They were taken to the execution chamber known as 'Phansi Kothi' with a cotton cloth on their faces and their hands tied behind their backs. A district magistrate present at the spot asked each of them for their final wish. However, they the Nirbhaya convicts not express any last wish.

This magistrate countersigned the death 'black' warrant and was present during the execution of the sentence along with the jail superintendent, deputy superintendent, a medical officer. The convicts were also offered a request to have a religious leader of their choice present for the execution but all four declined.

Death sentences of all four convicts carried out. The bodies of the four men are then taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for an autopsy. The bodies will be handed to the families of the four convicts once the post-mortem examinations are completed.
