Kurnool, Oct 2: Many people living in Kotthakota and Sunkesula villages are being evacuated as the Sunkesula barrage breached due to heavy inflow of water on Friday.The officials shifted the people living in low-lying areas to safer places and rehabilitation centres. Sunkesula barrage is under severe threat as six of its thirty vents are not in a position to be operated to facilitate release of water.Five gates have become defunct as the cable used for lifting them is out of order. The sixth gate has become inoperable because of a stop-lock device for impounding water.Located 28 km upstream of the Kurnool city, the barrage is designed to discharge 5.24 lakh cusecs only.

The officials expected the flood to cross 5 lakh cusecs, which might put awesome pressure on the barrage.The floods in the Tungabhadra resulted in flooding of dozens of villages and several low-lying areas in Kurnool city. The river flowed above the danger mark in the temple town of Mantralayam.While the people living in surrounding areas of Piligundla and Vankaladinne are being evacuated as Gajula Dinne project across Handri River in Kurnool breached on Friday.
