It has been two years since OTT giant Netflix had commissioned its first Telugu original, Pitta Kathalu, but the making took its own sweet time. The web show bringing together shorts of four filmmakers Nandini Reddy, Tharun Bhascker, Sankalp Reddy and Nag Ashwin will finally stream on the platform tomorrow afternoon from 1.30 pm. Expectations surrounding the show have been high because of the credibility of the filmmakers, but the early reports of Pitta Kathalu aren’t that promising.

Reportedly, the Telugu show hasn’t shaped upto expectations. While Netflix had given complete liberty to all the filmmakers in the project in terms of the story, only two of the four films have shaped up well – the ones made by Tharun Bhascker and Nandini Reddy. While Tharun Bhascker’s short is a love story amid a political backdrop, Nandini Reddy’s film explores the relationship between a writer-wife and an insecure husband.

It’s extremely surprising that Nag Ashwin’s film, in a futuristic world where technology has taken over humans, hasn’t received positive reports. In the case of Sankalp Reddy, the fact that he hadn’t done any relationship drama in the past was always going to be a disadvantage.  Another important reason for Nandini Reddy and Tharun Bhascker’s works turning out well could be due to their experience in the digital space. Tharun Bhascker’s entry into Telugu cinema was facilitated by the popularity of his short films while Nandini Reddy has worked with multiple OTT platforms across a variety of genres. Saanve Megghana, Lakshmi Manchu, Amala Paul have apparently given good performances in the show.
