  In the wake of a spurt in Acid Attacks on women, the AP Assembly is planning to introduce a specific provision in the Indian Penal Code for tackling such offences with an iron hand.

According to Home Minister Ms Sabitha Indra Reddy the Acid Attacks had become rampant and recently the latest Acid Attacks on two married women merely because they spurned the advances of two men indicate the sexual jealousy of men.

She was speaking in the Assembly on Friday when the Telugu Desam Members expressed concern over increasing Acid Attacks on women.

TDP MLA Annapurnamma said that Acid Attacks had become rampant and in most cases the victims were women. She demanded the Home Minister to take stern measures to contain the menace. They said the Chief Minister had not given full power to the Minister to deal with such cases. For this the Congress members raised objection.

The Home Minister said that such cases were being tried under Section 326 of IPC. The introduction of a specific provision was imperative and that both the Union and State governments could legislate.

Minister for Development and Child Welfare Konda Surekha has sought the cooperation of TDP members in connection with Nidadovulu MLA T V Rama Rao, who was facing criminal cases for allegedly raping and murdering a student.

The TDP members raised objection for this and the session witnessed trading of charges between treasury benches and Opposition members.
