Condemning the police firing on the villagers of Kakarapalli in Srikakulam District, Praja Rajyam Party president K Chiranjeevi on Tuesday demanded that the state government institute a high level judicial probe into the incident.

Taking a serious note on the deaths of the two protestors, Mr Chiranjeevi demanded that the government announce a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to next to kin of the victims and Rs 3 lakh to the injured.

He also demanded ‘strict’ disciplinary action against guilty officials. The PRP chief appealed to the state government to order a high level judicial probe into the incident to bring the facts to light.

Incidentally, this was the first time the actor-turned-politician had raised his voice against the state government after announcing that he would merge his party with the Congress.

Alleging that the government policies are benefiting a few rich people, Mr Chiranjeevi said his party had never shied from its responsibilities. He assured that the PRP would always question the government over any faulty policies and work to protect the interests of the people.

The PRP chief also appealed to the government to review its agreements with private companies to set up power plants. The power plants set up by the private companies are causing serious environmental damages, Mr Chiranjeevi said. He opined that the government should cancel the agreements with the companies if they failed to protect local environment and people’s interests.
