Mega Power Star Ram Charan's 'Naayak' and Victory Venkatesh and Prince Mahesh Babu's 'Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu' proved to be the blockbusters at the box office. Rarely do we see two movies of star heroes getting blockbuster statuses in Pongal season. However, in 1997 and in 2000, we witnessed two blockbusters each for the two years and the details of those movies are given below.
1997: After a series of failures in the previous years, Megastar Chiranjeevi's 'Hitler' was released on 4th January, 1997. Initially the movie received mixed responses. Later, the talk of the movie improved and finally the movie attained blockbuster status. The movie ran 100 days in 42 direct centers and it was an all time record then. Meanwhile, Natasimham Nandamuri Balakrishna's 'Peddannayya' was released on 10th January, 1997. The movie generated positive talk on day one itself and this movie also got blockbuster status. 'Hitler' got better collections than 'Peddannayya'.
2000: Chiranjeevi's comedy entertainer 'Annayya' was released on 7th January, 2000. Critics felt there was nothing in the movie to be accepted by the audiences. To their surprise, the movie got the blockbuster status and ran 100 days in 62 direct centers. On the other hand, Victory Venkatesh's family entertainer 'Kalisundam Raa..' was released on 14th January. The movie got the blockbuster status with thumping collections. The movie also ran direct 100 days in 75 centers which was an all time record then. This movie got better collections than 'Annayya'.
