As we are nearing to the celebration of 64th anniversary of the Indian Independence Day, a retired professor named Shreekanth Malushte approached Bombay High Court challenging the use of word ‘Sindh’ in our National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ and has sought to replace it with the word ‘Sindhu.’

Word ‘Sindh’ in the anthem was replaced by the ‘Sindhu’ in January 1950 by our government. However, anthem continues to be sung and broadcast in a wrong manner by using incorrect word of ‘Sindh’ which is now a part of province in Pakistan while ‘Sindhu’ is the river in India.

‘The National Anthem is sung in two difference versions in country. While some use the correct word ‘Sindhu,’ several others continue singing with the wrong word,’ the petitioner said. So, he wanted the Government to seek directions by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Culture to clarify and use the correct word. This petition is likely to come up for a hearing on September 15.

How do you sing our National Anthem? Is it ‘Sindh’ or ‘Sindhu’?
