Dia Mirza's Diwali Campaign Draws Political Criticism

Celebrities are often approached to promote social causes because their popularity can help messages reach a wider audience. But Dia Mirza's latest experience shows how quickly such participation can become controversial.

The actress recently featured in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) pollution-free Diwali campaign. The initiative encouraged people to celebrate the festival responsibly and was undertaken following the Bombay High Court's directions on controlling pollution.

However, her video attracted objections from Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam, who questioned her involvement and criticised the message. The BMC subsequently removed her video from its social media accounts, while similar campaign appeals by other celebrities reportedly remained available.

Dia later clarified that she had recorded the video at the request of the BMC and the High Court in the public interest. She also said she had not charged any fee for participating in the campaign.

The episode highlights a difficult position for celebrities. Their popularity makes them useful voices for public awareness, but their involvement can also attract scrutiny when the subject becomes politically sensitive.

There is a larger question here about the purpose of celebrity campaigns. If public figures are invited to support civic initiatives, should their participation depend on whether everyone agrees with the message? Public awareness campaigns are meant to encourage discussion, not become another battleground for political disagreements.
