Sun TV Network Limited has filed a copyright infringement suit against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Limited in the Madras High Court, alleging unauthorized use of content from Jailer, Jailer 2, and Coolie. The television network presented an agreement with composer Anirudh Ravichander, granting it full rights to exploit the music.
The lawsuit claims CSK used audio tracks, background music, and dialogues from the movies in a promotional video for the IPL team's new jersey without permission. The video was shared on CSK's social media platforms before the lawsuit was initiated, and was later taken down and re-uploaded with different music.
Sun TV's senior counsel urged CSK to avoid using the copyrighted material in the future, stating that the franchise stopped using it after receiving an email on March 1. The Madras High Court is now examining whether additional restrictions or penalties should be imposed for the unauthorized use of the content.
The suit alleges that CSK exploited the promotional video for commercial benefits, selling merchandise for ₹2,399. The court has directed CSK to file an affidavit, with the hearing adjourned to March 16. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for copyright protection in the entertainment industry.
