Vijay's highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of KVN Productions, the Bengaluru-based production house behind the mega-budget movie. The film, touted as Vijay's cinematic swansong before his entry into politics, was initially set to release on January 9.
The production house announced the postponement late Wednesday night, citing delays in obtaining the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate. The film had applied for the certificate on December 18 and made 27 cuts and modifications recommended by the examining committee. However, a complaint by a single member of the committee led to the withholding of the certificate.
The Madras High Court had reserved orders on the matter, but with the case not being listed for judgment on Thursday, the production house decided to postpone the release. The film, produced at a budget of Rs 500 crore, had generated significant buzz, with tickets selling for as high as Rs 1,000 in many centers in India.
The postponement has also affected overseas markets, with distributors in the UK, US, and Malaysia confirming the delay. The film's gala audio launch was held on December 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with 80,000 Vijay fans in attendance.
