Indian film industry has a history of censorship and restrictions, but somehow it has not been applied to OTT platforms. As censor board it had no powers over the internet’s landscape it has given chance to some filmmakers and streaming platforms to come up with extra bold content. They are coming up with violent, abusive, and vulgar content. They believe it as creativity and artistic expression.
Now the question is How far is too far, and how much freedom is too much freedom. Are we giving too much control into the hands of the content makers in the name of freedom? In our journey of watching content online everything depends on which button we are pressing on our remote.
Many argue that censorship is needed for OTT Platforms. They feel that it will protect vulnerable users, particularly children, from watching harmful content like violence, abusive and vulgar content. However Opponents argue that censorship infringes on freedom of creativity and enforces a particular worldview.
As per our point of view what exactly is obscene is also difficult to define. Enforcing censorship on OTT platforms is also challenging. But the government should find a balance between protecting users from harmful content along with preserving freedom of speech and expression which should give a safer space for children.
