Check Review, What’s Behind?

Nithiin's last film Bheeshma was a super hit, yet Check is carrying decent to low buzz given Chandrasekhar Yeleti's last few films were flops and blame it on low key promotions. The film has two heroines Rakul Preet Singh and Priya Prakash Varrier. Will this film provide a break for the director who hasn’t got a single commercial hit till date? Will Nithiin continue the success streak?

Check Story Review:

An innocent genius, Aditya (Nithiin) is sentenced to death on terrorism charges and is waiting for a lawyer to take up his case. Manasa (Rakul Preet Singh) comes forward to defend him but for some reasons she withdraws. Aditya, meanwhile becomes a champ in chess and in order to prove he is not guilty, he needs to win grand master for presidential pardon. Will he win the grandmaster? Will he get a presidential pardon? Will he be able to prove his innocence in the process?

Check Artists, Technicians Review:

Chandrasekhar Yeleti is a master film maker known for unique and content rich films. Due to his realistic approach and also for choosing certain kind of subjects which strictly impress one section of public, he is failing to deliver commercial hits. Continuing the same mistake, he came up with a subject that deals with Chess which first of all isn't familiar for large sections. Then, the second biggest problem is there are many unanswered questions in the end.

Though first half was little engaging, narrative turns repetitive and tedious in second half. Moreover, we don't find any intelligence in the way Nithiin plays game. The moves look pretty ordinary. The much hyped climb episode was also not bang on. Dialogues however have a bit of depth. Kalyani Malik tried hard to make Rahul Srivastav visuals look appealing with his background score and the only song in the film is enjoyable on screen as well. Editing by Sanal Anirudhan added to the negatives. Production from Bhavya Creations looked rich.

Onto artists, Nithiin played an intense role and came up with okay performance as a prisoner. He was good in action sequences but hasn’t got much to prove. Sai Chand got meaty role and as usual he lived in the role. He got more screen time than two heroines. Rakul Preet Singh is cool in the role of an advocate. Priya Prakash Varrier oozed oomph in a glamorous role that had a shocking twist. Murali Sharma and Sampath were good. Posani Krishna Murali and Harshavardhan are okay.

Check Review Rating Analysis:

Films based on sports generate special interest. Problem here is that Chess in an indoor game which is not as familiar as that of outdoor games like cricket and hockey. Moreover, the game of Chess isn’t an engaging factor for viewers. Director Chandrasekhar Yeleti at least should have taken experts opinion for games which appeared as beginners play.

The film begins on an exciting note with Nithiin along with others getting sentenced to death penalty in a bomb blast case. When he almost lost hopes, Rakul takes up the case. Story turns interesting with Sai Chand's entry as a chess coach who has been jailed for last 13 years. The flashback of Nithiin shows romantic track and ends with a twist. Nithin plays a game to prove himself that he is innocent but Rakul spoils it. Interval is bang on with Rakul refusing to continue with the case and all the doors for Nithiin are shut.

Things slow down in second half with the focus shifting on chess game. We mostly see Nithin playing chess or taking on rowdy batch in the jail. Rakul discloses shocking information about the real identity of Priya Prakash Varrier. Then Sampath's entry makes narration further boring. The last wish of playing last game with World Champion Viswanathan Anand was a stupid idea and roping in a junior artist for the role doesn't make any sense. The pre climax twist is also not as exciting as the hype around it. The film ends with many unanswered questions.

On the whole, Check is half baked film with not so engaging narrative. Though first half was entertaining with some interesting elements, second half lacked the exciting element to engage us. Chandrasekhar Yeleti fails yet another time to make an entertainer. However, Nithiin is exceptional in the role. CJ goes with 2 star rating and the film may not work out at box office given lavish budget spent on it.
