Mysore, Sept 21:

The Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT), one of the acclaimed squadrons in the world today, is ready to conquer the Dasara skies for the first time! This year’s Air Show is turning out to be the most privileged platform for tourists visiting. But unluckily, Indian Air Force (IAF) has agreed only for a flypast owing to lack of refueling facility for HJT-16 Kiran military trainer aircrafts at Mysore airport. Mr M S Lokesh, working president, Dasara Air Show Sub-Committee, said that after five years of continuous persuasion,  the IAF has finally agreed to allow SKAT to perform in Dasara Air Show.

“Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has taken special interest to make this happen. He met Defence Minister, Air Marshall in person and requested for the squadron participation,” Lokesh said.

The SKAT was formed in 1996 and is primarily composed of the HAL HJT-16 Kiran military trainer aircraft and is based at the Bidar Air Force Station. It has 13 pilots of whom only 9 will flying at any given time. All pilots in the team are Qualified Flying Instructors (QFI's) with around 2,000 hours of fighter flying experience and 1,000 hours on the Kiran aircraft.

Mr Lokesh said that Sarang Aerobatic Team, which is IAF’s first helicopter formation display team, will also be showcasing their skills for the first time. The team flies three HAL- ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter) Dhruv (North Star) helicopters. Besides, IAF personnel will perform Akash Ganga sky diving, Small Boy formation and real-time slithering operation. Also, three fighter aircraft and three transport aircraft will flypast and Mi-8 and Chetak aircraft will be on static display.

Another major attraction will be the Air Warrior Drill Team to demonstration, which is also included for the first time. Mysore Bannimantap Stadium will be venue that is angry to enthrall the crowds. A trail Air Show will be held on September 22 and the full fledged show is scheduled on September 24.
