Suicide of Telugu girl Madhuri Sale, a final year student at IIT-Kanpur is raking a rare discussion about the sufferings of rural South Indian students in IITs. There was a debate about the regional bias against students from rural south India that forced this Nalgonda girl to end her life in IIT-Kanpur.

Shantamma, mother of Madhuri ruled out that her daughter could not take the pressure of exams, the silly reason cited by IIT-K authorities. ‘Madhuri used to call me often expressing her desire to come back unable to take the harassment but I encouraged her to finish her B.Tech course,’ said Shantamma.

Suicide of Madhuri is eighth such in past five years and findings of inquiry committees have never been made public. ‘Although academic rules at all the IITs are stringent, students from the South may be brilliant but are bound to struggle in the North-dominant setup. One should realize that IIT is not the end of the world,’ an IIT-M student said a famous new paper agency.
